Chessie
This proposed low-cost Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) platform will have an estimated sensing time of 400 hours and a range of 248 miles at 3 knots. A single Chessie unit will have a low cost putting them in the attritable category, while still reusable. Unlike conventional AUVs that are often prohibitively expensive and overly specialized, Chessie is intentionally designed to be low-cost and capable of supporting a wide range of sensor payloads and mission types. This unlocks a “many-sensors-many-missions” model, where users can deploy fleets of Chessies rather than single expensive units, dramatically improving spatial and temporal resolution of underwater data collection.
